In original Gothic, women were often presented as trembling victims pursued by predatory males. How far is this true of the first narrative in Angela Carters collection, tbc

In original gothic tales such as Hamlet, Dracula, the Castle of Otranto  women are often presented as trembling victims who are pursued by the predatory males.  Carter can be seen as presenting women as the victim at the start of the narrative but towards the end the women become more independent and knowledgeable which contrasts  against the 18th and 19th Gothic literature style. Carter may present the characters in a different way than the stereotypical image of other original gothic texts as she is trying to show how early on there are spilt gender roles and by changing these roles she is showing how Fairy tales can set stereotypical values and Carter can be seen as challenging the hegemonic ideology as she , herself, has said that's she's 'putting new wine in old bottles'.

In The Bloody Chamber, women can be seen to challenge the description of a trembling victim as  the narrative voice challenges social struction, as she states 'how he must want me'  which  contrasts what many peoples belief of what a women should be like as it can be seen that she is taking a more male role as she appears to be focused on sex rather than the romance side of the relationship.  Another challenging women that appears in the bloody chamber is the narrators mother who is described as an ' eagle eyed-featured, indomitable'  which again challenges the norm of traditional role as toward the end of the narrative she becomes 'wild thing' which shows how Carter swapped  the male role with a woman as in the original text it was the brothers who had saved her. By having the mother save the daughter is shows how women can take control of the situation  and in the end she becomes more powerful than the man. Another way try women becomes more powerful and presented as a brave character instead of a persecuted victim is when the narrator picks up 'the forbidden key from the heap' and goes into the door of hell. By disobeying her husband orders she gains knowledge and power which allowed her to be more aware of what is happening around her. By disobeying her husband wishes she is also disobeying the patriarchal society that she is bought up in. Carter may be emphasising the suppression that men and the patriarchal society have on women and by allowing the mother to be the saviour instead of the man she emphasises this view point even more clearly.
It can also be seen that the bloody chamber challenge the idea of the predatory male as Jean Yves can be seen as an obedient servant as he followed the orders of the narrator who said to him 'you shall not!' and he was 'soon...gone' this suggests that despite him being male he knows his place and due to him being of lower power he does not challenge it because he is proletariat and not challenging the ruling class despite him knowing that she should not follow. By her giving him the command it gives her power and a voice, which in turns, makes him inferior. He can also be considered inferior because he is blind, so helpless and not threating, so he becomes kind as he listens and understands what is happening around him Cater may being making the male character not predatory compared to original gothic texts as it can be seen as she is trying to empower women and their role in society, trying to show that they have their own voice and hat to do with it. it could also be due to there only being two male characters - Marquis and Jean Yves, it shows the contrasting nature of people -inferior or predatory.
However, it can slo been seen as women are presented as trembling victims as the narrator states that she is sure that she 'wants to marry him', this makes her a victim as she seems to have no power in what she wants because this marriage would elevate her power, which shows that's she's a victim of society.  This is further supported by her wearing 'a choker of rubies' . The choker makes the narrator a victim as the choker is a symbol of control from her husband, however due to her. Accepting it she is also accepting that she has not power in her life  and not challenging it.  She can also been seen as a victim as there was an 'imprint of her stranglers fingers' this makes her a victim as she has no voice thus no power  in her life to make her own choices or decisions. Furthermore even carter has described the narrator as a 'trembling'  character, emphasising the stereotypical role that is recognised with gothic. Carter may be making the narrator appear to be a trembling victim so that there is a clear link to the gothic, however, she could also making her appear to be the trembling victim so the metamorphis is even more shocking.
Carter makes the male characters in the bloody chamber as a predatory figure as the marquis had 'married three times' before this can be seen as a predatory figure as it is a suspicious cirstamces which are overlooked due to his power of him being a man and a man of money.  Also, the narrator describes him as a 'striking resemblance between the act of love and the ministrations of  a tortureer' this shows his animalistic and predatory side do the marquis, which is soon apparent when the narrator goes into the bloody chamber and sees his three previous wives. This can also be seen when the marquis 'closed her legs like a book'  which also shows how these relationships of his are only physical ideology of his. When he states that the choker will 'serve... For a dozen more fiancĂ©e' shows his predatory side as he is planning to keep killing his fiances for his own use and for his own desires'. Carter may be making the male characters predatory as she could be trying to empathis the  role that women accept the power and view of men.
To conclude, the women in the bloody chamber are, to begin with presented a trembling victims however, after the metamorphis they change into more inderpendant, confident have have more liberties as they have gained knowledge who helps them to free themselves from the  hegemonic ideology .

The Erl King

The purpose of the gothic is to question science and religion which is considered to be the hegemonic ideology which when int was written and still today can be considered innovative and experimental. The purpose of the bloody chamber is to challenge stereotypical conventions and gain knowledge from the truth which are shown though these Fairytales. This is also shown through The Erl King as despite it being based on a traditional folk tale, there are elements which make it come across modern and Immature such as the Erl king himself.

The gothic is to question science and religion which is considered to be the hegemonic ideology which when int was written and still today can be considered innovative and experimental, which is supported by the Erl king as it is considered as the most experimental of all the narratives in the bloody chamber. The purpose of the bloody chamber is to challenge stereotypical conventions and gain knowledge from the truth which are shown though these Fairytales. This is also shown through The Erl King as despite it being based on a traditional folk tale, there are elements which make it come across modern and Immature such as the Erl king himself which makes it untraditional and innovative. It is considered most experimental as it is constantly changing perspective and it challenges what you thought you originally believed in,this is symbolised as the young women as she believes she meets the Erl king again, these shows conventions of the gothic such as th supernatural, isolation and vulnerability.

Bettelheim

1. Bettelheim's ideas help us understand fairy tales as int the Bloody Chamber shows the flaws in fairy tales as if you wrap your child up in cotton wool you are doing more harm to the child than good this is shown through the narrator marrying the Marquis who had 'three previous wives' and when she disobeys him she nearly dies as she is too naive to not to go in the bloody chamber. as in Bluebeard  the three brothers save her showing male superiority, however, in the bloody chamber the mother is the savior which contradicts the traditional stories. It also shows how you need to socialist children to things that is considered bad and inappropriate to get them used to it and not to be so naive like the narrator in the bloody chamber.

2. Bettleheim's idea help us understand Gothic and its purpose as it shows the unpleasant side of life which the child who is often lead to believe that everything is good and well will need to get used to, to grow and experience things to make them a better adult. it could be considered important as it gives a form to go to expose oneself which society wouldn't want seeing.

3. Angela Carter mixes both Gothic and fairy tale genres in the bloody chamber because  it shows true life and how dangerous it can be if you are to naive to know what is dangerous. By mixing it with fairy tales it shows how each sex should behave in order to succeed but by doing so you get in danger and Carter exposes these truths which are exposed either by the narrator having sex or entering the bloody chamber, this is where she is transformed as she has experienced more things and became knowledgeable.

Interiew work

Task one:

How does Carter expose sexist an stereotypical views?
Carter exposes the sexist and stereotypical views by showing the female characters as a weaker sex compared to the men. This is shown in the Tigers Bride as Beauty's 'father lost me to the beast at cards' as it shows that due to her being a woman she can be gambled away for what the man wants. It can also show how women are being traded for finical gain, this is shown in the Tigers Bride and The bloody Chamber as both the narrator or someone in the family benefits from the marriage, this exposes the nature of the patriarchal society and how it suppresses women for the mans desire and need.

How does Carter show change and empowerment for women thought out the stories?
By allowing the female narrator to narrate her own stories can be considered as a sign of empowerment as it is more typically a male dominate job. The narrator each go through a transformation, this is what makes the narrator believe that she is more liberated and empowered as she us gaining knowledge, power and self awareness. This is often a main theme though out Carter's stories as in The Bloody Chamber the young, naive, innocent woman often the narrator goes into the Bloody Chamber and comes out different as she has gained some sort of knowledge, this often leaves a mark as shown  at the end of the Bloody Chamber the narrator has a 'stain' on her head as a sign of her knowledge she has gained.

How are masks used in Carters stories?
Masks are used often specifically in The Tigers Bride as it a symbol of conformity and a way to hide your true self. The Beast in the Tigers Bride has a mask which is 'too perfect' who cannot be what it seems, for the Beast, the mask is seen as imprisonment who cannot reveal his true self as of social conventions which are formed though out peoples belief and other stories and until others accept him as he is, he cannot be empowered as being what he truely is.

What does a rose symbolise?
The white rose is a symbol of Beauty's virginity as white is often symbolised as innocence and purity which the father soon gamble with to liberate him as the 'father wants to make a bargain with' to empower him more than his daughter. However, the thorns on the rose show danger as Beauty in The Courtship of Mr. Lyon  who ends up nearly 'dieing' due to her absence and it can be seen as a warning for equality for women and that they should not be dominated due to the patriarchal society.

How are women compared to in the Bible:
Women in Carters stories are often to character in the Bible specifically Eve as she was made to leave the Garden of Eden which made her weak and inferior. This is often shown though out the novel and it is first seen in the Bloody Chamber as he ordered the heroine to get the 'key' used for the Bloody chamber and ordered her not to go in that room, however, she does showing similar parallels who did not follow orders from the  dominant figure and is punished as was the narrator who was sent to be executed by the marquis 'heavy sword'.

 Task two:
The article shows many elements and key points which explore many themes though out the stories from the bloody chamber. It shows how Carter has shown male views on women. It also shows how fairytale form the reader as person. Shows how many characters hide behind masks due to society. it shows how the patriarchal society effects the individual.
1. elements.
2. male view.
3. fairytale.
4. masks.
5. patriarchal.

The article shows the effect of the parochial system and how women’s desire are supresses by the male dominance and how Carter exposes how  Carter exposes the sexist and stereotyped views.  It shows how binary opposites are used to mirror each other. How the fathers are able to ‘gamble’ away their daughters for self-improvement and finical gain.  It shows how the Bible is linked to the stories she writes, how masks are symbolised to hide oneself how masculinity and femininity are shown though the characters and the use of their gaze, empowerment, self-worth/awareness, the effect on these stories and changes.

The Courtship of Mr Lyon

1. Carters use of the word 'courtship' indicates that Mr. Lyon is a traditional and appears to be more romantic man, who doesn't seem to  fit in as he lives in a castle with 'telephone wires' and becomes very emotional every time she leaves and due to her absence he is near death . The description of Mr. Lyon emphasises the more romantic and ideological time which is where Beauty is pure, and innocent compared when she is exposed to the real world she becomes spoilt corrupt, and self centred. The title could be considered not appropriate as, despite Mr. Lyon showing affections to her she doesn't as she was bought to him by Beauty's father not by choice as she sees him as the Beast, despite showing the same affections towards him at the ends because she has realised this is where she feels happy once again. However, once she has come back from the country and sees him dying she realises that he is not the beast/animal as she thought he was but a man beasue she looked into his eyes and saw his 'agnate eyes...like a man'.

8. The house and gardens of Mr. Lyon (the Beast) is described as a 'short, snowy drive performed a reticent flourish before a miniature, perfect, Palladian house that seemed to hide itself shyly behind snow-laden skirts of an antique cypress', however compared to the Grimm Brothers version of beauty and the Beast it is described as 'castle, bathed in light' . In both descriptions the house and gardens are described soft, gentle and welcoming which juxtaposes the description of the building it self, it also juxtaposes the beasts nature when Beauty's father took the rose as there was a 'furious warning' and ' Two bloodshot eyes, gleaming angrily' towards him.

14. When Beauty leaves the Beasts house there are many changes such as  the 'leafless roses' and the spaniel's coat was 'dusty and snarled', the ground were described as ' iron....there were no green shoots on the roses'. The description of the house changed due to Beauty leaving the Beast and becoming corrupt and became a 'spoilt child'. Comparing the description to Brother Grimms Goldilocks and the Three Bears after Goldilocks is that 'someone has eaten all the porridge' and sat/slept in their beds. the descriptions differ as when Beauty leaves she unintentionally caused the problems where as Goldilocks left the Three Bears house in a sate of chaos.

15. The Beast and Beauty help each other by accessing both male and female characteristic such as Beauty being the rescuer which is typically a male dominate role and the beast being the one to be rescued. By swapping the roles/ enhances each others characteristics they become happy as they have each other to occupy their lives. The message Carter could be trying to put forward is that by having women in the male dominant role is a sign of empowerment and enlightenment which is achieved when the woman have more power and become more equal to men.

16. Another transformation that takes place in the story is the change in Beauty,  who has changed from a naive girl who followed her father and his decisions to a 'spoilt child' due to the wealth her and her father came into money from The Beast, to the more brave and active as she 'quickly, quickly' who now doesn't always follow her father as she 'quickly scribbled a note for her father' and then came to the beasts rescue.

Task three:
1. The 'devil's picture books' are a book showing a deck of cards which have various images on them which is believed by some that show the fate of the reader.
2. The narrator calls The Beast 'Milord' in a sarcastic tone.
3. The white rose symboloises romance and female purity, however as the flower if picked and given it is a sign of male power and domination over the female character as the rose is seen as a beautiful and powerless thing due to it being picked.. The thorns that are shown in The Tigers Bride show the danger and suffering through oppressing women.
4. The significance of the word 'fleeced' are that it was two meanings one is that someone has came into money which the beast has as he cheats when playing cards due to him placing 'mirrors' behind the other player or to cover something with a fleece which is what The Beast is covering up.
5. The quote 'gobble you up' comes from the fairy tale of Red Ridding Hood the significance is the young women go into the woods on purpose therefore showing them that they are aware of the trouble that there is.
6. The reader tells us that the inhabitants are not driven by appearances or luxuries as it says 'bought solitude, not luxury, with his money' and 'nothing human lives here' which shows that the beast can further control the people there as they are a 'clockwork twin'.
7. The significance of the fresco that is described as 'fruit and blossom grew on the bough together' is that it is a similar description of the garden of Eden. Also, due the it being a fresco it means that it is always there and cannot leave as it is painted into the plaster it is a constant reminder of something from the Bible.
8. The description of the soubrette suggests to the reader that the beast has kept his promise of returning her daughter and possessions to the father but it also suggests that she did not sacrifice herself for her father as she feels more interdependent by doing so which is considered as a change.
9. The girl compares herself to an animal by saying that no one in the house has 'not one soul' this is important as she believes that men defies her and have power over her and only have her for her beauty and their desires.
10.The quote 'The tiger will never lie down with the lamb; he acknowledges no pact that is not reciprocal' is significant as

Marxist

1. The overt style of The Bloody Chamber is that it is a Gothic Fairytale. Whereas the overt is the belief that you have the power, this is shown when the narrator was given the keys by Marquis as he says 'all is yours, everything is open to you-except the lock that this single key fits'. It is only a belief as she clearly does not as the 'ruby chocker' she wears, given by the MArquis is a sign of controllment. Another Marxist view can be seen when she gave the inheritance money from the marquis to 'various charities' as she is helping people who are in a lower class than she is. Conflict of class is also shown through out this novel, mess pic ally towards the end as the mother 'put a single, irreproachable bullet through my husbands head', this is considered Marxist as it is the lower class fighting against the upper, also man vs woman.

2. Due to the postmodern feminist gothic text it clearly shows that Carter is precisely aware of what the meaning of her texts are as it is shown when the narrators mother is a saviour, reversing the stereotypical male role to the woman as it syomblies the fight against lower and upper classes. The obvious nature of her writing  shows that this unsubtle nature of the text was done on ourpose as she has said herself that she is 'putting new wine in old bottles'.

3. Due to Carter being from middle class she can see how the upper class (the bourgeoisie) and the lower class (proletariat) live. As the BLoody Chamber was written in 1979 it reflects the struggle between the two classes as many lower class people were coming into more money and this was considered threatening to the upper class as they believed they are not of the same standard as they are no do they have the same morals which is explored though out the Bloody Chambre stories.

(I'm not to sure what to write for statment 4 and 5)
